Open PhD Position (Starting January 2026) – Transportation Engineering
Cyprus University of Technology – Transportation Engineering Lab
Supervisor: Dr. Paraskevas Nikolaou
The Transportation Engineering Lab at the Cyprus University of Technology invites applications for a fully funded PhD position starting in January 2026, as part of the MOBITAS project: Mobility Optimization for Better Infrastructure, Traffic and Safety. This research will focus on the development of an integrated framework for analyzing, simulating, and optimizing transport systems and infrastructure in Cyprus, with an emphasis on road safety, public transport efficiency, and infrastructure resilience.
The successful candidate will contribute to the creation of detailed simulation models using PTV VISSIM and VISUM, evaluate intervention scenarios (e.g., redesign of junctions, bus priority lanes, safety treatments), and support the development of data-driven policy recommendations for public authorities. The position offers the opportunity to work with real-world transport and safety data, collaborate with stakeholders, and gain hands-on experience with advanced tools in transport planning and microsimulation.
Candidate Profile
Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Urban Planning, or a closely related field. A solid foundation in transportation systems analysis, GIS, and statistical or simulation-based modeling is required. Proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., Python, R, MATLAB) and strong communication and analytical skills are essential. Familiarity with PTV software is an asset but not mandatory.
