Department of Civil Engineering and Geomatics

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the website of the Department of Civil Engineering and Geomatics at the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT). As a newly appointed Chair of the Department, I invite you to find out more about our undergraduate and post-graduate course offerings and take the time to explore our Faculty’s diverse research activities and important achievements.

One of the Department’s highlights for 2015 was the completion of its first ever external evaluation conducted by renowned academics from Israel, Germany and the UK during November 23-25 2015. I believe that just a brief extract from the evaluation report suffices to convey the extremely positive spirit of the overall evaluation.

“We would also like to express our admiration of the phenomenal progress the Department has made in both research and teaching in Civil Engineering and Geomatics in the relatively short period of 8 years since it came into existence. This is indeed a testament to the dedication and commitment of your staff and the leadership of the Department. In this short period you have managed to develop two well-balanced and internationally competitive 1st degree programmes, both of which seem to run well and have a good Ευάγγελος Ακύλαςreputation."

"We were impressed by the quality of the members of academic staff including the younger staff and new appointees and applaud the University’s policy of providing a generous start-up fund to newly appointed academic staff. In research we were impressed by the great variety of innovative projects in many different fields undertaken by your academic staff which while diverse nevertheless maintain relevance to the overall brand and objectives of the Department. The Department has also managed to maintain a high level of service to society through their extensive engagement with public and private sector organisations in research, professional public activities and consultancy projects.”

Indeed, our Department takes pride in its past achievements and actively pursues high-quality education, as well as academic and scientific excellence, while continuing to offer its services to society both at the national and the international level. Prof. Onoufriou, for example, is currently the President of the Board of the Cyprus Hydrocarbons Company. Prof. Chrysostomou is the Head of two Delegations of Cyprus to international bodies: (a) the Fédération International du Béton (fib) Technical Council and General Assembly, and (b) the Technical Committee 250 of the European Standardization Body (CEN TC/250). Prof. Hadjimitsis is a member of the National Experts Committee appointed by the Government for evaluating Cyprus’s efforts towards joining the European Space Agency (ESA) as a full member. In addition, our Faculty also continues to play an important role in University-level administration: Prof. Hadjimitsis is elected at the post of Vice Rector of Academic Affairs, replacing former Vice Rector Prof. Onoufriou, Prof. Chrysostomou is elected at the post of Vice Rector for Economic Planning and Development, while Prof. Kyriakidis is the Dean of the School of Engineering and Technology.

Last but not least, it is with great pleasure that I note the launching of our second master’s program in “Geoinformatics and Geospatial Technologies” in September 2016, highlighting the beginning of a new and exciting era for our Department. Hoping that you will be following regularly our updates from our journey towards educational and scientific excellence, I wish you an enjoyable browsing experience at the Department of Civil Engineering and Geomatics at CUT.
