Women in Science Dr. Panagiota Miltiadous


On the occasion of the World Day for Women in Science, the Cyprus University of Technology, with a view to encouraging women and young girls towards engaging in science, presents women scientists being employed at the University and devoted to their research activities.

"As a mother of two children, my dedication to research is the greatest sacrifice. However, I think maternity and career in research can keep up with a woman's life, provided that balance is kept between the two. "

Dr. Panagiota Miltiadous has been working at the Nursing Department since September 2010, where her duties are theoretical and laboratory teaching in the undergraduate course in Biology and Biochemistry as well as the undergraduate course in Microbiology and Infection Control. She graduated from the University of Crete, having been awarded a BSc in General Biology (2004) and later she acquired an MSc in Molecular Medicine with specialization in Neurobiology, entitled "IGF-I as a neuroprotective factor to the hippocampus degeneration caused by kainic acid" (2007). She has also been awarded a PhD in Neurobiology entitled "The Use of IGF-I in Cellular Therapies for the Treatment of Neurodegenerative Diseases: a study in animal models" (2010) by the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.

She participates in a research programme in "Biosystemic Survey in the Care of Severe Sufferers". In 2005 - 2010 she secured funding from the General Secretariat for Research and Technology (GESRT) , Research Enhancement Programme 2003 and worked in the Laboratory of Biology and Biochemistry of the Department of Nursing of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, under the supervision of Prof. Fotini Stylianopoulou, for research that falls in the field of neurobiology and in particular in the field of stem cell transplantation in epilepsy models for cell therapy. She has published articles in major scientific journals, with high impact as well as announcements at local and international conferences (Greece, Germany, Spain, the Netherlands). She is member of scientific companies for the Neurosciences , Federation of European Neuroscience Societies (FENS), International Brain Research Organization (IBRO) .

Her research interests lie in the field of Neurobiology, mainly in the study of stem cell behavior and their therapeutic use, gene characterization, antibiotic response of pathogens, antibiotic herbal factors and hormonal influence on animals’ genome.

Bio-research laboratory , Department of Nursing

Currently, her research activity in the "Bio-Research Laboratory" focuses on the field of microbiology in relation to antibiotic factors of plant origin and their use in first aid and other clinical applications. For the analysis of biological indicators, for purposes of a clinical research programme entitled "Bio-Behavioral Research in the Care of Severe Sufferers", the “Elisa method” is being used. She also participates in the analysis of clinical research samples to improve life expectancy in a cancer patient population.

The "Bio-Investigation" Laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and provides the possibility of a large and multipurpose research field which may include topics such as biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, pharmacology, microbiology and immunology.
