In the rapidly changing conditions of the natural and structured environment, the role of the Civil Engineer in society is constantly being upgraded, as the challenges become more and more complex. The depletion of natural resources, climate change, pollution and the effects on structures due to their aging, are challenges that must be addressed through a sustainability framework that will propose solutions. These solutions should not only br techno-economically optimal, but also environmentally friendly. The Master in Civil Engineering and Sustainable Planning aims at the high level of training of students in the fields of Civil Engineering with emphasis on sustainable planning and management of the natural and structured environment.

The program is designed to meet both the current and future needs of industry, providing students with the opportunity to enrich their knowledge through teaching advanced sustainable planning, infrastructure, road construction, geotechnical engineering and plumbing, but also use modern and innovative methods for monitoring and managing the natural and built environment. At the same time, students will specialize in one of the above areas with the preparation of a Master's thesis, under the supervision of the academic staff of the Department. Graduates of the Master in Civil Engineering and Sustainable Planning will be able to meet the modern technological challenges, as well as to continue their studies at a doctoral level.

Aims

The postgraduate program in Civil Engineering and Sustainable Planning aims to meet the following objectives:

  • To recruit high caliber and motivated students
  • To undertake cutting edge research in Civil Engineering with emphasis in Sustainable Design
  • To complete the academic training of its graduates to the fullest and prepare them to work in the industry, private and public organizations
  • the programme is accredited to fulfil the academic requirements for professional accreditation
    • in Cyprus, in the case of 3-year programme graduates coming from abroad
    • in Greece, in the case of 4-year programme graduates (professional accreditation of Technical Chamber of Greece)
  • To enrich and deepen the understanding of topics that have already been covered in undergraduate programmes, with emphasis in sustainable design.
  • To provide a framework for the development and application of design, analytical and research skills that are pertinent to the engineering profession.
  • To create a suitable foundation for the development of professional and communication skills that are pertinent to the engineering profession.

Learning Outcomes

During this postgraduate degree students are expected to:

  • Develop research activity in a civil engineering topic and/or sustainable design
  • Analyze structural engineering problems (steel, concrete, structural integrity)
  • Develop skills in structural/geotechnical design and resource/infrastructure management.
  • Deepen their analytical skills and knowledge in engineering science.
  • Use design codes and international standards pertinent to structural, geotechnical and pavement design

The postgraduate program is addressed to graduates of recognized Higher Education Institutions in the Science of Civil Engineering.

The successful completion of the postgraduate program requires a total of 90 ECTS, including the preparation of the Master Thesis, which is credited with 30 ECTS. The curriculum of the Master's level postgraduate program includes only compulsory courses, five in the first semester (Autumn semester) and five in the second semester (Spring semester). The elaboration of the Master's Thesis begins with the beginning of the summer term, if the teaching part of the program is successfully completed and is expected to end at the end of the summer term.

The postgraduate program is offered in the form of full or part time study. In the case of full-time study, the program is completed in thirteen months, which includes two academic semesters and the summer period. The latter begins immediately after the end of the Spring semester and includes the months of June, July, August and September. In the case of part-time study, the program can be completed in twenty-five months which include four academic semesters. For the summer period: after the end of the two years of teaching, the same applies as in the case of full-time study.
