  • One (1) post in the field of  “Environmental Health”

Description: One (1) PhD positions is available in the research group of the Water and Health Laboratory of the Cyprus International Institute for Environmental and Public Health at the Cyprus University of Technology. The successful candidate will be trained on key thematic concepts of the human exposome, i.e. the holistic representation of all those environmental, lifestyle and behavioral factors related to the development of chronic diseases with special emphasis on endocrine disorders. The W&H Lab team has recently coined the concept of the urban exposome, i.e., the continuous spatiotemporal surveillance/monitoring of quantitative and qualitative indicators associated with the urban external and internal domains that shape up the quality of life and the health of urban populations, using small city areas, i.e. neighborhoods, quarters, or smaller administrative districts, as the point of reference.

The PhD student will apply the framework of the urban exposome and related exposomic tools (metabolomics) in population health settings. The study of all human exposures to harmful agents found in water, air, food or behavioral/lifestyle habits and their health effects requires the combined use of novel human biomonitoring and biostatistical methods. The successful candidate will be trained on the use of either state-of-the-art human biomonitoring protocols, personal sensors or novel processing bioinformatics platforms (e.g. metabolomics) for better understanding of the disease process.

Our laboratory is equipped with advanced mass spectrometers to conduct specialized analyses in human biospecimen and it is located in the old town of Limassol, just minutes away from the cosmopolitan Mediterranean seafront. The Cyprus University of Technology has been included among the Top 300-350 best universities in the world, based on the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2018.

Required Qualifications: Highly motivated candidates should possess a Bachelor and/or Master in Life Sciences or Physical Sciences or in a related discipline.

Funding: The successful candidate will be offered financial support, depending on skills and funding availability.

Research Advisor: Konstantinos C. Makris, Associate Professor, konstantinos.makris@cut.ac.cy

Description: The research position will focus on the problem of obesity and diabetes and the associated risk factors, including environmental, hormonal, and lifestyle factors.

Required Qualifications: Interested applicants must hold an accredited Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree in a related field. Proficiency in the English language is required. Any relevant work and/or research experience will be considered as an advantage.
