Iodine is an essential nutrient for thyroid metabolism and thyroid health and the focus of our latest paper from the THYROCHEM project, our project in collaboration with the "Ion Chiricuta" Institute of Oncology in Cluj-Napoca, Romania. We investigated the iodine status of adult females in Cyprus and Romania. While in Romania women were categorized as iodine sufficient, females in Cyprus were found to be mildly iodine deficient. Adverse effects of iodine deficiency are partly reversible when occurring during adulthood. However, during pregnancy and child development thyroid hormones play an important part in organ development including the brain thus iodine is an important in these critical life stages. Iodine is supplied by marine fish or more reliably by iodized salt. In future studies here in Cyprus, iodine status of school age children and pregnant women should be investigated to ensure that all children develop to their full potential. More details on our findings can be found in our paper published in Public Health.

Our group along with the "Ion Chiricuta" Institute of Oncology in Cluj-Napoca, Romania recently finalized the evaluation of results for the project THYROCHEM, a collaboration between Cyprus and Romania. The just published work in PLOSone assessed the exposures to bisphenol A (BPA), its chlorinated derivatives, and bisphenol F (BPF), including their effects on thyroid nodules of females (http://bit.ly/2eI7pU7).
Special thanks to all volunteers and all those that helped set up the study from both Cyprus and Romania!
About the study:
Ubiquitous exposures to BPA in the study population were associated with alterations in circulating thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) levels of adult females in Cyprus and Romania. Data provided evidence of a significant positive trend between spot urinary BPA levels and TSH, even after adjusting for possible confounders. This study showed higher urinary BPF levels in both countries than those reported for an adult group in the U.S. Both BPA and BPF were detected in all study participants indicating the need for further studies on human exposures to these compounds and for assessment of their possible effects on thyroid gland function.

Nice to see our new paper published!
Solving the puzzle of exposures to trihalomethanes, hepatic injury and type 2 diabetes is definitely not an easy task. The exposome framework implementation in large, prospective studies will help towards unveiling the "whats" and "hows" of disease development.

The study shows that air pollution causes 3.3 million excess premature deaths mainly due to cardiovascular and respiratory diseases worldwide. The model used projects that the number of premature deaths from air pollution will be doubled by 2050. Sep 15
