Fine Arts Deparment

Mission

The Department of Fine Arts at the Cyprus University of Technology is a dynamic and creative educational environment for the development of multidisciplinary artistic practices, critical theory, and research. We educate artists, researchers, and cultural practitioners through exciting studio-based learning centered on contemporary thinking and practice, anchored in advanced critical theory and highly developed networks of cultural knowledge and interpretation. Rooted in Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean, the Department of Fine Arts cultivates an ambitious environment that contributes to cultural discourse locally and internationally, producing forms of knowledge and vision that engage with urgent social, ecological, and technological questions.

Vision

The Department aspires to be a leading hub for contemporary artistic and cultural research at the crossroads of Europe and the Middle East, renewing Mediterranean trajectories of cultural inquiries of exchange, fluidity, cosmopolitanism, and hybridity. We aim to shape an internationally connected educational platform for experimentation and public engagement, strengthening Cyprus’s artistic and cultural ecosystems and enabling the international circulation of contemporary art from the region, while actively forging critical and collaborative networks across research, artistic, and community contexts.

The launch the postgraduate Programme in the History and Theory of Art, which rendered the Fine Arts Department operational since September 2015 is directly related to the  significance attributed to the historical, philosophical and general theoretical training of students.

Values

Artistic Research and Academic Excellence
We uphold artistic research and studio practice as rigorous modes of inquiry, supported by scholarly depth, critical reflection, and high standards of pedagogy.

Criticality and Decolonial Perspectives
We foster critical engagement with histories, canons, archives, and institutions, working toward decolonial approaches to knowledge, representation, and cultural memory—particularly within the Eastern Mediterranean context.

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion
We commit to inclusive educational and institutional cultures, informed by feminist, queer, and intersectional frameworks, and attentive to accessibility and disability as a vital field of practice and knowledge.

Environmental Responsibility
We address ecological crisis and climate change through artistic thinking and responsible making, promoting material literacy, sustainable studio practices, and ethical production.

Digital and Media Literacy
We engage critically with digital transformation, image technologies, and emerging media, cultivating both creative experimentation and ethical awareness.

Public Engagement and Social Responsibility
We understand art as a public practice and cultivate partnerships with communities, schools, cultural organisations, and civic actors, contributing to social justice, public space, and cultural participation.

Interdisciplinarity and Collaboration
We value collaboration across disciplines and professions, building bridges between art, design, technology, health, and the sciences, and strengthening international networks and mobility.

Integrity and Care
We promote a collegial culture of integrity, mentorship, and care, supporting respectful critique, wellbeing, and responsible leadership.
