Welcome note

The Department of Mechanical and Materials Science and Engineering at the Cyprus University of Technology offers a modern broadly based undergraduate and postgraduate program that promotes learning, thinking, understanding and problem-solving abilities necessary for the technological needs of the 21st century. We combine the strengths and professional engineering recognition of the mechanical engineering discipline with the innovative nature of Materials Science and Engineering in a unified program.

The Department offers a 4 year curriculum and grants a single degree in Mechanical Engineering while in parallel we offer courses specialized in material science and engineering discipline. The curriculum within the first two years, providing a strong foundation in science and engineering fundamentals while providing a more focused education with fundamental and specialized mechanical and materials science and engineering courses during the last two years of the curriculum. The curricula have received Mechanical Engineering accreditation from ETEK, which is the official government body that provides engineering professional registration in Cyprus. The Department of Mechanical Engineering and Material Science and Engineering provides undergraduate degree of Mechanical Engineering.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering and Material Science and Engineering offers also postgraduate MSc program in Mechanical and Material Engineering. Parallel to the development of our undergraduate and postgraduate MSc programs, we have also developed our post-graduate PhD program and already have several highly qualified students attending.  We have also developed our teaching and research laboratories which are being continuously upgraded while providing the state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and laboratory exercises for the training of our students. The Departmental labs are further used for undegraduate and postgraduate diploma thesis studies.

Recognizing that modern Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering is a creative profession in which students are trained to be problem solvers and entrepreneurs in today’s world, we teach our students to learn how to understand, design, construct, test, and operate all kinds of mechanical and materials systems. At the same time, we expose them to cutting-edge, interdisciplinary areas, such as bioengineering, nanotechnology, alternative energy systems, robotics, optoelectronics and MEMS to allow them to work not only in Cyprus but at any other technologically demanding part of the world.

The faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering has achieved within the last 5 years a reputable level of research activity with more than 33 research grants as coordinators and partners from local and European granting agencies exceeding a budget of 8.5M Euro in total for our University. The European funded proposals with members of the faculty as partners and the two strategic infrastructure research grants funded by the Republic of Cyprus through the Cyprus Research Promotion Foundation and the Structural Funds of the European Union entitled Molecular Electronics and Photonics and Nanostructured Materials Systems are the highlights of hard work from all our departmental faculty members.

Our vision is to establish this department as an international center of research and learning in the harmoniously coexisting fields of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering, and our objective is to offer high caliber undergraduate and graduate degrees. Our priority is to see that all our graduates are successful in obtaining employment in Cyprus industries or manage to seek postgraduate studies in Cyprus or abroad.

We hope you find all you need in our website, but we will be happy to provide more information to you and encourage you to communicate with us.
