Vision and objectives of the department

VISION AND OBJECTIVES OF THE DEPARTMENT

Vision: To develop and establish itself as an international centre of research and learning in the fields of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering.

Objective: To offer high calibre undergraduate and post-graduate education in Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering and become the first choice for students who want to serve in industry and make meaningful contributions to modern technology and civilization both in Cyprus and in the European Union in general.

The specific goals of the Department are:

  • To attract and graduate high caliber students.
  • To provide a well-balanced and multifaceted education that will promotes the technical and personal life-long learning of students both at the undergraduate and graduate levels and render them competitive both in Cyprus and abroad.
  • To undertake and successfully implement technologically advanced local and international research programs both in the Mechanical and Materials Engineering fields as well as in other interdisciplinary domains.
  • To promote a continuing active collaboration with research and industrial partners both in Cyprus and abroad.
  • To establish continuous communication channels with the local industry with the objective of servicing the needs of both parties with respect to the pertinent practical knowledge and skills.
  • To continuously improve the technical know-how and facilities in the department to reflect pertinent changes and developments in modern industry.
  • To be an active partner in the growth and development of the city of Lemesos in particular and Cyprus in general.

The graduates of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering will gain the necessary tools which will allow them to:

  • Design, develop and optimize mechanisms and machines such as automobiles, space crafts, marine vessels, recreation vehicles, wheelchairs, exercise equipment, testing equipment and many others.
  • Manufacture, analyze, test and optimize a broad range of products and tools.
  • Design and develop biomedical systems, devices and components such as artificial organs, prosthetic devices and others.
  • Investigate and simulate biological systems on a macroscopic, microscopic, and nanoscopic scale such as arterial and vein systems and regenerative mechanics at the cell and tissue level.
  • Design and develop microelectromechanical devices and systems such as sensors, actuators, micro- grippers, micro-motors, drug-delivery systems etc.
  • Control of the manufacturing processes via scientific tools and Quality Assurance Systems with the objective of enhancing the productivity of companies and industrial partners.
  • Select and install indoor environmental control equipment such as heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning units.
  • Design and develop appropriate coatings for the environmental protection of structures.
  • Work in all aspects of the energy sector, such as energy production from renewable (e.g. solar) and compatible (e.g. natural gas) energy sources, energy conversion, energy storage etc.
  • Model, via analytical and computational tools, the micromechanical and nanomechanical behavior of novel materials such as composites and smart composites, nanocomposites, etc.
  • Develop and sustain automation and control algorithms and processes for the manufacturing, food, chemical, fuel and other industries.
  • Participate in software teams that develop computer programs and packages for the design and analysis of mechanical products and devices.
  • Design and implement specifications control of materials and structures.
  • Be members of advisory boards and expert panels to make sure products work efficiently, reliably and safely.

The above list gives only a brief insight as to what mechanical and materials engineers do. The graduates of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering will be able to seek employment in:

  • Industry
  • Research Centers and Labs
  • Energy Production and Management Sector
  • Telecommunications Sectors
  • Universities and Research Centres
  • Government Organizations and Public Interest Organizations
  • As Entrepreneur/Business Owners
