POINT ALLOCATION RULES ON THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC STATUS

1. The University provides various forms of support to students facing socio-economic problems, such as financial aids, scholarships for postgraduate studies, feeding, etc.

2. In any case of support or other benefit provision related to the economic and social status, the interested students will have to submit the necessary certificates for the documentation of their socio-economic situation.

3. The Academic Affairs and Student Welfare Service is responsible for receiving, evaluating and ranking applications on the basis of points derived from measurable criteria related to the Economic and Social Situation of the students and their family, as detailed below:

3.1 Economic status of the student’s family

The "economic status" criterion refers to the per capita annual gross income of the student’s family. The criterion "financial situation" also includes the following: a) Guaranteed Minimum Income, b) Public Assistance, c) Special Childbirth Allowance for Single Mothers, d) Support Scheme for Pensioners with Low Incomes, e) Victim Relief Fund, f) Child and Single Parent Family Allowance, g) Old Age Pension, h) Widow's Pension, i) Cyprus Agricultural Payments Organization (CAP) Allowance, j) Any other allowances given.

The parents, the student and other unmarried non-working children, living with their families, (a) being under the age of 18, (b) attending secondary or tertiary education institutions in Cyprus or Abroad or (c) serving the National Guard, are considered to be dependent members of the family.

If the applicant is married, then the applicant himself/herself and their children are considered as dependent.

In the event that the annual per capita income, as shown in the Insurance Account Statements and/or the Tax Returns of the members of a family, appears lower than €6,000, for the purposes of crediting the financial statement, it is considered that the credit base is €6,000 per capita income.

The economic status criterion consists of 1-19 points, as follows (note: if the per capita annual family income exceeds €15,000, the point allocation is zero):

3.2 Social status of the applicant / student family

The criteria can be any social and/or health problems faced by the student and/or his/her family.

The family social status criterion of an applicant / student receives the following points:

4.1    Supporting documents required for each application

4.1.1          Tax Certificates

Tax Certificates of student’s both parents for the previous calendar year, regardless if they were working or not

(applicable for women of 23 years old and above and for men of 25 years old and above)   

or (if the student is married)

Tax Certificates of the student and spouse for the previous calendar year, regardless if they were working or not

4.1.2          Certificates of annual insurable earnings

Certificates of student’s both parents for the previous calendar year, regardless if they were working or not

4.2    Additional supporting documents submitted on a case-by-case basis

4.2.1  Birth certificates of all dependent children of the family (from the Citizen Service Center)

4.2.2  Certificates of attendance for brothers studying, of the academic semester that coincides with the date of submission of the student's application. The certificate must state the year of admission (note: if there is an objective difficulty in submitting a certificate of the current semester and provided that it is clear that the brother/sister being a student is still in the prescribed years of study, a previous year certificate may also be accepted. )

4.2.3  Military Service Completion certificate for the applicant's brother serving in the National Guard

4.2.4  Certificate for parent's disability pension receipt (at least 60%) or a parent's incapacity pension receipt (at least 75%) for the previous calendar year (by the Social Insurance Department or by the Citizen Service Center)

4.2.5  Certificate of retirement pension receipt for the previous calendar year by the Social Insurance Department or by the Citizen Service Center.

4.2.6  Certificate of widow's pension receipt for the previous calendar year by the Social Insurance Department or by the Citizen Service Center.

4.2.7  Statement of public aid receipt for the previous calendar year by the District Welfare Office (please attach a cut of the total annual amount received for the previous calendar year). Applicable for cases / applicants or parents receiving public benefit allowance or one-parent family allowance.

4.2.8  Parent death certificate for applicants who are orphans (by the Citizen Service Center).

4.2.9 Certificate for applicants who are children of missing persons (by the Vivctims’ Relief Committee).

4.2.10  Marriage Dissolution Certificate (applicable for divorce cases in the family)

4.2.11 Certificate for applicants who are children of families residing permanently in Rizokarpaso (by the Humanitarian Affairs Committee).

4.2.12  Medical report on the applicant’s illness / disability for cases with serious health / disability problems as those defined in the application.                       

4.2.13  Additional supporting documents and / or certificates e.g. grants/subsidies from Organizations (such as the Cyprus Agricultural Payments Organization, Mountain Residents allowances, etc.)

4.2.14  Any other supporting documents that the Academic Affairs and Student Welfare Service deems necessary for the application’s documentation.                        

 

The point allocation rules on the socio-economic status have been adopted at the 95th meeting of the Senate (02.05.2018) and 83rd meeting of the Council (05.24.2018) of the University. They were revised at the 131st Meeting of the Senate held on 17/6/2020 and ratified at the 108th Council Meeting held on 16/7/2020.

They were revised at the 194th Meeting of the Senate held on 7/2/2023 and ratified at the 142nd Council Meeting held on 23/3/2023. They were revised at the 216th Meeting of the Senate held on 5/12/2023 and ratified at the 158th Counicl Meeting held on 23/4/2024.
