It is our pleasure to announce that on Monday, April 10th, Associate Prof. Nick Bassiliades of the Aristotle University will be visiting CUT to present a lecture on Web Information Extraction, Semantic Entity Identification and Linking.

The talk will cover some aspects of Web Information Extraction so that extracted entities can be uniquely identified by semantic similarity search in Web knowledge bases (a.k.a. Linked Open Data) and linked to their similar entities in these datasets.

Technologies that will be discussed are Web Data Extraction terms and tools, giving emphasis to the DEiXTo tool, and Semantic Web related languages, such as RDF, SPARQL. The dataset that will be described is the DBpedia LOD dataset.

All the above is going to be explained through a concrete use case which extracts data about University rankings from the web sites of several well-known ranking lists, then uniquely identify Universities by linking them to the corresponding DBpedia entity, and finally, merges individual ranking lists into a single dataset to compare different ranking lists statistically. The use case is supported by a Prolog application that will be briefly described as well.
