Sustainable development at a crossroads: transformation of the industrial state during the perfect storm


Professor Nicholas Ashford, PhD, J.D. gave a lecture yesterday at Amphitheatre Pefkios Georgiadis of the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) entitled: “Sustainable development at a crossroads: transformation of the industrial state during the perfect storm”. Professor Ashford presented the current framework for sustainable development and its main structural components, i.e., economy, environment and work. He discussed in depth the current economic system, its problems and challenges, and proposed solutions that put sustainability at the core of development with the co-operation of all stakeholders including the government and the private sector. The lecture was followed by a lively discussion that focused on the Cypriot approaches and applications of the sustainability paradigm in its national policy.

The seminar was organized by the Cyprus International Institute for Environmental and Public Health (CII) and the Department of Environmental Science and Technology (Jean Monnet Module on European Energy and Environmental Policy) of CUT.
Professor N. Ashford is the Director of the Technology and Law program at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and he teaches Environmental Law at the postgraduate programs of the CII. More information about Professor N. Ashford’s activities are available at his website: ashford.mit.edu/.
