Dean’s Welcome Message

Welcome to the website of the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts of the Cyprus University of Technology. The Faculty is composed of two departments, the Department of Multimedia and Graphic Arts and the Department of Fine Arts.

The Department of Multimedia and Graphic Arts aims at the development and continuous promotion of multidisciplinary approaches and values on which all successful practitioners, in the fields of Design, Multimedia and Graphic Arts, should base their work. Taking into account the wider economic and social conditions of Cyprus, the Department develops, through research and teaching activities, strong links with local and international groups and centres that are professionally and research-wise active in the areas of Design, Multimedia and Graphic Arts, in order to provide excellent employment prospects for its students. The Department has, from the start, set high standards of education, in order to offer high quality undergraduate and postgraduate programs of studies, as well as being engaged in high quality research activities. The Department offers one of the most competitive undergraduate programs in Cyprus, with a high number of candidates compete, via the entry exams, for the 35-40 openings offered each year. In parallel to the undergraduate program, the Department offers master’s programmes (currently under revision), as well as doctoral studies.

In addition, the Department houses eight research labs, which are coordinated by members of the academic staff.

The Department of Fine Arts offers:

  • Bachelor of Art Programme in Fine Arts
  • Master of Arts Programme in History and Theory of Art
  • Doctoral Programme (PhD by research) in History and Theory of Art

With these programmes, the Department of Fine Arts aims at becoming a place for artistic and overall cultural research and creation. With an international outlook, the Department aims at becoming a meeting point between Europe and the Middle East, projecting anew the centuries-old character of the Mediterranean as a space of crossings, interactions and transcultural cosmopolitanism. At the same time, it aims at creating an environment of high theoretical and aesthetic calibre, for the renewal and enrichment of the Cypriot cultural discourse, as well as, at creating the necessary framework for the promotion abroad of local, contemporary artistic creation.

The Undergraduate Fine Arts Degree includes studies in two-dimensional and three-dimensional creation, as well as in technological applications in art – from photography to video and animation, and to digital, visual and sound applications. These studies are substantially complemented by courses in the History and Theory of Visual Arts, Architecture and New Media, as well as in Philosophy (including Aesthetics) of Art.

Directly related to the importance placed on the historical, philosophical and, generally, theoretical education of the students, is the existence of the Master of Arts Programme in the History and Theory of Art, with which the Department was inaugurated in 2015.

Additionally, the Department of Fine Arts houses the Research Lab in the History and Theory of Art, among the various research aspects of which is the undertaking of doctoral theses.
