The Centre for Lifelong Learning of the Cyprus University of Technology, in collaboration with the Language Centre of the University, is organizing a continuing professional education program titled:

''Russian for Employees in the Hospitality Sector (restaurants, bars, cafés, and kitchens''

 

Program Overview

The program is designed to help employees and entrepreneurs in the food and beverage sector acquire basic Russian language skills, enabling them to serve Russian-speaking tourists and customers effectively, while also supporting smoother collaboration among staff members (especially when Russian-speaking employees are part of the workforce). The focus is placed on practical communication, customer service, and order management in real workplace settings.

The increasing number of Russian-speaking permanent residents in Cyprus makes learning Russian essential for employees in the food and beverage industry, in order to provide effective customer service. Furthermore, many businesses employ Russian-speaking staff, and this program will facilitate communication and cooperation among colleagues.

 

Program Objectives

  1. Improve customer service.
  2. Develop basic workplace language skills.
  3. Enhance the competitiveness of both businesses and employees.
  4. Enable employees to handle basic work-related situations in Russian and to communicate effectively with customers who do not speak Greek or English.

The aim of the program is to train participants to communicate in Russian, with emphasis on terminology and expressions relevant to the food and beverage sector.

 

Target Audience

The program is addressed to:

  • Employees working in the hospitality and food service sector, such as waiters/waitresses, baristas, cooks, cashiers, receptionists, and food delivery staff.
  • Individuals who wish to strengthen their language skills in order to improve their professional profile and employment prospects in areas with a significant Russian-speaking clientele.
  • Employers and entrepreneurs in the food and beverage industry who wish to empower their staff through targeted language training.

 

Learning Outcomes – Competencies Acquired Upon Completion

Knowledge-Based Outcomes

Upon completing the program, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the restaurant menu (food and drinks).
  2. Understand basic rules of hospitality and customer reception.
  3. Clearly communicate orders and costs.

Skills-Based Outcomes

Upon completing the program, participants will be able to:

  1. Accurately process customer orders.
  2. Communicate successfully in real-life situations (e.g., restaurant reservations, welcoming guests, taking orders), using Russian words and expressions.
  3. Describe dishes and drinks offered at the restaurant, including ingredients and components.
  4. Use basic polite expressions and customer service phrases.

Attitude-Based Outcomes

Upon completing the program, participants will be able to:

  1. Engage in friendly conversations with customers.
  2. Handle complaints or problems raised by customers in Russian, with courtesy.
  3. Recognize key cultural characteristics of Russian-speaking customers in the hospitality sector (e.g., expectations, communication style).
  4. Feel confident and willing to serve customers through the effective use of the Russian language.

Dr. Dimitrios Boglou – Special Teaching Staff, Language Centre, CUT.

Instructor
Maria Kousiounou – Certified Russian Language Trainer.

  • Specialist at the CUT Language Centre.
  • Graduate of Tomsk Polytechnic University with a degree in Russian Philology (Teaching Foreign Languages and Cultures), with honors.
  • Holds a Master’s degree and additional qualification as a Translator in Professional Communication.
  • Certified Vocational Training Instructor (CyQF/EQF Level 5) accredited by the Human Resource Development Authority of Cyprus (ANAD).
