Russian Language for Business

The Centre for Lifelong Learning of the Cyprus University of Technology, in collaboration with the Language Centre of the University, is organizing a continuing professional education program titled:

''Russian Language for Business ''

 

Program Overview

The program Russian for Business focuses on learning the Russian language for professional use. It covers vocabulary, grammar, and expressions relevant to the business world, including presentations, correspondence, negotiations, and communication with Russian-speaking partners or clients.

The aim of the program is to train participants to communicate effectively in Russian and to use business-specific terminology.

The curriculum introduces specialized vocabulary related to business sectors such as economics, trade, marketing, and management. Participants will also acquire essential grammar knowledge to understand and compose business documents, emails, and letters. Proper pronunciation practice ensures effective communication with Russian speakers.

Additionally, participants will be introduced to Russian culture, enabling them to better understand Russian business practices, avoid misunderstandings, and build strong professional relationships. By the end of the program, participants will be able to develop and present business ideas and proposals in Russian, as well as negotiate using appropriate techniques and professional language.

 

Target Audience

This program is designed for entrepreneurs and employees working in investments, sales, advertising, imports, and exports. It is also suitable for job seekers in these fields. No prior knowledge of Russian is required.

The increasing presence of Russian-speaking investors and companies in Cyprus makes knowledge of the Russian language an essential skill for professionals in business and commerce.

 

Course Modules

Lesson 1 (2 hours) – Introductory Session

  • Icebreaker activity: Quiz on Russian culture (Kahoot).
  • Introduction to the alphabet using familiar words (Greek/English parallels).
  • Learning outcomes:
    • Knowledge: Recognize the sounds of the letters and basic features of Russian.
    • Skills: Read and pronounce simple words.
    • Attitudes: Appreciate the value of learning a new language and show interest in Russian.

Lesson 2 (2 hours) – General Business Terminology

  • Basic business vocabulary.
  • Corporate structures and types of enterprises.
  • Specialized terms in economy, trade, marketing, management.
  • Grammatical gender.
  • Lesson 3: Office Communication (greetings, introductions, etiquette).
  • Lesson 4–5: Verbs (1st and 2nd conjugations), countries, nationalities, languages.
  • Lesson 6: Company description and directions.
  • Lesson 7: Numbers, time, scheduling meetings.
  • Lesson 8: Professions and staff presentation.
  • Lesson 9: Describing companies and products (adjectives).
  • Lesson 10: Finance and accounting (invoices, payments, banking).
  • Lesson 11: Writing emails and letters (formal/informal).
  • Lesson 12: Russian business culture and etiquette.
  • Lesson 13: Marketing and advertising in Russian.
  • Lesson 14: Customer service and complaint handling.
  • Lesson 15: Final session, role-playing, practical application, and assessment.

  1. Communicate orally and in writing with Russian-speaking partners, clients, and suppliers.
  2. Welcome and assist clients in person and online.
  3. Manage business correspondence and meetings.
  4. Explain their company’s services.

  1. Use essential and specialized Russian business vocabulary.
  2. Understand business documents and correspondence (offers, contracts, invoices).
  3. Handle business processes such as orders, negotiations, and payments.
  4. Adapt communication style to foster effective collaboration with Russian speakers.

Attitude-Based Outcomes

  1. Gain confidence in using Russian.
  2. Appreciate its importance in business.
  3. Encourage colleagues to pursue Russian language training.
  4. Acquire a competitive advantage.
  5. Recognize cultural and professional aspects of Russian business etiquette.

Maria Kousiounou – Certified Russian Language Trainer.

  • Specialist at the CUT Language Centre.
  • Graduate of Tomsk Polytechnic University with a degree in Russian Philology (Teaching Foreign Languages and Cultures), with honors.
  • Holds a Master’s degree and additional qualification as a Translator in Professional Communication.
  • Certified Vocational Training Instructor (CyQF/EQF Level 5) accredited by the Human Resource Development Authority of Cyprus (ANAD).
