CUT joins global network supporting threatened and displaced scholars

The Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) participates in the international support network for threatened and displaced scholars of the Institute of International Education – Scholar Rescue Fund (IIE-SRF), hosting Dr. Svitlana Babiichuk through the global program dedicated to the protection of academic freedom and scientific knowledge.

In a letter addressed to CUT Professor Andri Ioannou, representatives of the Institute of International Education and the Scholar Rescue Fund expressed their appreciation to the University for its participation in and support of the program, welcoming CUT to the IIE-SRF Alliance, the global network of individuals and organizations providing meaningful support to threatened and displaced scholars.

Through this collaboration, CUT provides Dr. Svitlana Babiichuk with the opportunity to continue her academic and research work in a safe university environment, actively reinforcing the principles of academic freedom, international cooperation, and the free exchange of knowledge.

Across the world, numerous scholars are unable to continue their valuable research and teaching due to wars, persecution, and political crises. Through its participation in the program, CUT contributes substantially to safeguarding academic institutions at risk by offering a safe academic haven to scholars affected by instability and forced displacement.

For more than 100 years, the Institute of International Education (IIE) has supported scholars seeking refuge from global conflicts and political crises. The IIE Scholar Rescue Fund was established in 2002 to formalize and strengthen the organization’s long-standing commitment to protecting the lives, voices, and ideas of scholars.

IIE-SRF is the only global program that arranges, funds, and supports fellowships and academic positions for threatened and displaced scholars at partnering higher education institutions around the world.

To date, the program has protected the lives and careers of approximately 1,200 scholars from 62 countries, in partnership with more than 500 universities and host institutions across 61 countries worldwide.

CUT’s participation in the IIE-SRF Alliance further strengthens the University’s international, human-centered, and socially responsible profile, highlighting its commitment to defending the fundamental values of higher education, science, and academic freedom.

The Cyprus University of Technology continues to invest in international collaborations and initiatives that promote knowledge, humanity, and science, actively contributing to the creation of an academic environment grounded in solidarity, inclusion, and global cooperation.
