Georgios Florides is Adjunct/Affiliated Professor of the Department of Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering and Informatics of the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT). He studied at the Higher Technical Institute (HTI)-Mechanical Engineering, (9/70-6/73) and obtained an MPhil in Engineering from Brunel University, London, UK (2/96-7/98). Sponsored by the Mechanical Engineering Department of Brunel University he acquired his PhD in Mechanical Engineering (7/98-12/01). He has also attended additional topics in Teaching Methodology, Health and Safety, a large number of technical subjects and other general topics. He is a registered Chartered Engineer of the Engineering Council, UK, member of the Institution of Mechanical [...]Engineers (IMechE) and honorary member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET). Georgios Florides served at HTI for a total of 32 years (1975-2007) at various positions, before joining CUT. He served from January 2008 until his retirement in December 2012, at the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering at the post of the Senior Lecturer. Since 2006 he also cooperates closely with Brunel University, London, UK holding the title of "Recognized Supervisor" for local supervision of PhD students, as well as participating in research projects. His research work deals primarily with issues of energy and renewable energy sources focusing on residential heating and cooling, Li-Br-water absorption refrigeration, greenhouse gas emissions from anaerobic digestion and geothermal energy. Especially, he is considered as an expert for the geothermal energy applications in Cyprus. On this topic he has supervised two specialized projects funded by the Research Promotion Foundation in primary research, with the aim to acquire data for geothermal studies and applications in Cyprus. His research work is appreciated especially by the supervision/participation in European and local programs (more than 15, 3 of which are in progress). He has authored more than 120 articles (peer reviewed) in scientific journals and in conferences. Also participated in the writing of five book chapters and has supervised the work of five students (3 ongoing) for obtaining a doctorate, four of which with Brunel University, London, UK and one with CUT. In addition, he creates statues of mythological figures and deals with the scientific construction of models of prehistoric animals in real size presenting all known detail and accuracy. His reconstructions are permanently exhibited in the museum of natural history of Photos Photiades in Nicosia, Cyprus, in the natural history museum of the Pierides Foundation, as well as in a private park in Athienou, Cyprus.
