Mission

The Department of  Communication and Marketing at the Cyprus University of Technology aspires to establish itself as a regional center for teaching and research in the field of public communication and to gradually become a nationally and internationally recognized center of excellence. Its mission is to enhance scholarship in the field of public communication, predominantly in those aspects that are linked to the media, journalism, political communication, advertising and public relations. It will strongly focus on the European dimension and on the related domains of the communicative disciplines, with emphasis on the historical, social and political aspects of their evolution.

In particular, the Department of Public Communication will aim to:

  • promote theory and research in communication sciences, especially on the interface between public communication, technology, and society
  • promote research and practice on emerging communication technologies
  • promote inter-disciplinary and comparative research programs
  • provide education for future and in-service practitioners in the communication professions
  • contribute to the wider understanding of the significance of the study of public communication in the public sphere
  • contribute to the improvement of public communication in Cyprus and to the development of the public sphere by promoting democratization, transparency and accountability
  • contribute to the wider cultural, social and economic development of the local society

To promote the above goals, the Department of Public Communication will seek to:

  • attract and develop the best students, academics and administrative staff
  • closely follow developments in society, particularly those related to public communication
  • design and implement pure and applied research programs
  • design and implement attractive and antagonistic undergraduate (BA) and postgraduate (MA, PhD) programs of study
  • design and implement short-term educational programs for new entrants and in-service practitioners in the communication professions
  • organize seminars, workshops and conferences
  • establish a forum for interaction between academics, media practitioners and public officials
  • create links between the Cyprus University of Technology and media institutions
  • establish academic links between EU and non-EU Mediterranean countries

The Department will initially offer a BA in Public Communication, the first of its kind at university level in Cyprus. The program will offer a unique blend of academic and practical experience. After completing a set of mandatory courses, students will choose one of three directions: Journalism, Advertising or Political Communication. Graduates of the program will be able to work and build careers in these specializations as well as in other communication-related professions.
