MGA Makerspace

MGA Makerspace is the makers lab of the Department of Multimedia and Graphic Arts (MGA) of CUT. It has been operating since October 2017, mainly to serve the internal research needs of the Department’s faculty as well as class projects and BA theses projects of MGA students.

The MGA Makerspace works in support of the whole Department without being limited to the purely constructive part of our design studies, constituting a link between the individual teaching (and research) laboratories, in order to promote the interdisciplinary experimentation that is central in the philosophy of the Department and the University.

Το MGA Makerspace hosts a wide variety of equipment which allows for interdisciplinary experimentation:

  • Laser Cutter
  • 3d Printers
  • 3d Scanners
  • Vacuum Formers
  • Silk Printing
  • Drum press

The MGA Makerspace staff manages the photographic and cinematographic equipment of the Department, the electronic equipment and the animation studios. They coordinate the lending of the equipment to the students, the researchers and the staff of the Department, while at the same time they provide technical support and consulting for the implementation of projects, both within the courses and the wider research carried out at the University. Last, the MGA Makerspace staff takes over the management of the Department's consumables.

Since the beginning of its operation, the MGA Makerspace has become an incubator of makers and digital machinery advisors across the island.

Our students have won distinctions in national competitions such as the Climate Launchpad and the Cyprus Digital Championship with products they have made at the MGA Makerspace. At the same time, a large number of our students who dive into new technologies, are employed at Cutting Edge, the university's Innovation Center.

Our graduates have successfully collaborated with independent artists to win participations at international art events such as the Biennale Larnaka. Competition entries have also won prizes in local artistic competitions, such as second prize for their entry at the University of Cyprus Sculpture and Installation competition in 2018.

Collaborators who started with us, have been hired by the Cyens research center and are heading the organization's Makerspace.

MGA Makerspace is a continuously evolving place where fruitful conversations turn innovative ideas into tangible products. For more information and assistance by our technicians, please visit https://www.mgamakerspace.com/
