Women in Science Maria-Dolores Christofi


On the occasion of the World Day for Women in Science, the Cyprus University of Technology, with a view to encouraging women and young girls towards engaging in science, presents women scientists being employed at the University and devoted to their research activities.

" I believe that both sexes have the same abilities in science, provided that one sex is supportive to the other ... regardless the fact that science is a feminine noun in Greek "

Maria-Dolores Christofi is a specialized scientist at the Department of Nursing. She participates in the teaching of the laboratory part of the undergraduate Biology-Biochemistry course and Microbiology and Infection Control course. Her undergraduate studies focused on the field of clinical herbal medicine ( BSc , hons , Herbal Medicine : health sciences ) and alternative methods of treatment (naturopathy , nutrition ) with clinical practice at the University of Westminster Polyclinic, London and at the College of Naturopathic Medicine London clinic. In 2013, she graduated from the University College of London , with postgraduate specialization in reproductive biology ( MSc Reproductive science and women ' s health) , where she attended courses in gynaecology, obstetrics, in vitro fertilization and genetics.

As an Associate Researcher, she has contributed to various research programmes from time to time at the Department of Nursing, at laboratory level as well as in bibliographic research. As part of her postgraduate education she had been chosen to work in a research project of the genetic laboratory at 'Royal Veterinary College ' which concerned the analysis of specific genes in the reproductive system. Currently she is a postgraduate partner in an ERASMUS + European research project under the acronym " JOBIS ".

Her research interests focus on the investigation of herbal substances with medicinal properties and their influence on molecular level as well as in clinical cases, studies concerning the field of gynaecology and the hormonal effect on the animal genome.

She deals with science communication and took part in the Pancyprian “Famelab Cyprus 2016” Competition, entitled “Designer babies”, where she has been awarded the 3rd prize.

"Bio-research laboratory" , Department of Nursing

Her current research activity at the "Bio-Research Laboratory" focuses on the field of microbiology in relation to antibiotic factors of plant origin and their use in first aid and other clinical applications. For the analysis of biological indicators for the purposes of a clinical research programme in the cognitive subject "Bio-behavioral Research in the Care of Severe Sufferers", the “Elisa method” is being used. She also participates in the analysis of clinical research samples to improve life expectancy in a cancer population.

The "Bio-Investigation" Laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and provides the possibility of a large and multipurpose research field which can include topics such as biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, pharmacology, microbiology and immunology.
