The Media, Cognition and Learning (MCL) research group, of the Department of Communication and Internet Studies at the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT), will host the fact-checking organization Ellinika Hoaxes for an online workshop which will take place on 5 May 2022.
Ellinika Hoaxes is the first official effort in debunking misinformative content on the internet and other information sources in Greece. The editorial team is comprised of people with experience in recognizing and debunking myths, fake news, manipulated videos and photos, and hoaxes. The Οrganization is a member of the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN), the Social Observatory for Disinformation and Social Media Analysis (SOMA), and the European Digital Media Observatory.
The workshop is part of the JOUREDIS workshop series which is focused on addressing misinformation through digital journalism. Participation is free, but registration is required.
Workshop 5: Fact-checking as a means of addressing misinformation and its role in contemporary journalism

In this workshop we will explain what the term fact-checking entails at a practical level, and how a modern fact-checking team operates. We will then present the tools used for verifying information and the dangers that emerge from misinformative contexts such as the pandemic. We will also elaborate on how Facebook’s third-party, fact-checking program (3PFC) operates, and the misconceptions that exist around the role that different groups on social media play (e.g., fact-checkers, journalists, news organizations). Finally, there will be a discussion with the participants to clarify concepts related to the fact-checking process and to resolve any questions that may arise during the presentation.
