University Profile

International Profile

An important parameter of the international recognition that the University enjoys is the universities’ international rankings. In less than 10 years of operation, the CUT has occupied high positions in international rankings. Specifically, in the 2017-18Times Higher Education World University Rankings (THE), the CUT is ranked 351-400 worldwide, while in the year 2016-17 it has been ranked among the top 401-500 universities worldwide as well as 16th among the world’s top Universities. At the 2017 Young University Rankings, the CUT is ranked 88th in the top new universities in the world, 12th  top-of-the-line university and 201-250 among the top European universities.

The international networking of the university is realized through its participation in 67 international organizations and bilateral cooperation with 78 universities abroad which lead to beneficial inter-university synergies. In addition, the internationalization strategy is enhanced through its participation in the Erasmus mobility programme and the national management of the IAESTE programme.

Excellence in Research

CUT is constantly committed to promoting research excellence, and is internationally distinguished in this area, providing a total of 40 million Euros of external funding for 227 research programmes. The latest European HORIZON 2020 programme has secured funding over 9 million Euros, with 23 research proposals, marking the highest rate of success in Cyprus. Recent successes include two ERC strategic projects totaling 3.3 million Euros, two “Teaming for Excellence” research proposals led by the CUT, which ensured the highest pan-European rating and participation in the creation of a RISE Excellence Center for technological and business innovation.

In addition to European research funding, strategic research synergies such as the establishment of the Cancer Research Center, in cooperation with the German Oncology Center, are being promoted. The three already existing approved research units, Eratosthenes, Heraclitus, and the Department of Social Informatics are also operating with great success.

Innovation and Transfer of Know-how

With a view to enhancing innovation and entrepreneurship, the CUT has made a decisive contribution, together with the other two public universities, to the formulation and adoption by the State of relevant legislation to facilitate the incubation of start-ups by universities for direct interconnection with the economy and productivity. At the same time, recognizing the importance of innovation and transfer of know-how, the University has activated an Approved Policy Framework for Ownership, Distribution and Commercial Exploitation of Technology aiming to exploit its research results.

In addition, it has appointed a responsible Office (INTENT) to examine applications from the university community for intellectual property protection (including patents) and aims to maximize the capitalization of innovations being developed in transferring know-how to the business world. So far, eight patents have been registered by academics of the University. In addition, the University maintains cooperation with state bodies (e.g. Research Promotion Foundation (RPF), European Programmes Office, National Research and Innovation Committee of the Ministry of Education and Culture) to promote innovation issues.

Finally, the University aims to actively participate in the Science Technology Park (STP), which will be the strongest tool for developing synergies with industry and, above all, with high technology companies.

Interconnection with Industry

The University closely collaborates with local agencies such as the Limassol Chamber of Commerce, Limassol Municipality, industry and shipping companies. Particularly in areas of excellence and in relation to economic developments such as Shipping, Hotel Industry, Energy Sources Management, the University is a bridge to communication with the international business environment. Also, the CUT, being the main research and development body for the region, assists and collaborates in a variety of ways with local and international SMEs.

University Development: a lever for the development of the city

Having its headquarters in the historical center of the city, the University has become a point of reference in Limassol, but also a lever of the city's development. In the 1st Development Pillar at the heart of the city, a series of historic buildings have undergone renovation and modernization, while the implementation of the 2nd Pillar of the University at the premises of the Old Hospital, the First Technical School and the Police Directorate has begun with the erection of the University Clinical Rehabilitation. The 3rd Pillar concerns the development of sites, sports facilities and other University facilities, open to the public, in the Berengaria area  in Polemidia. The Municipal and University Library (formerly referred to as Pilavakis Mansion) is expected to be completed by the end of 2017. Within 2018, the Fine Arts Laboratories (Tseriotis Building) will also operate, including workshops for sculpture, painting, engraving and a multifunctional teaching classroom. Upon establishment of the University in the city center, Limassol has become a modern and cosmopolitan student campus where the university community actively lives and contributes significantly to the city's events by organizing social, sports, cultural and artistic activities that enrich the student experience and the everyday life of the citizens of Limassol.

Social Responsibility and Offer

One of the most important operating principles of the Cyprus University of Technology is the social responsibility and the substantial contribution to society, in other words to operate responsibly in areas that are important axes of sustainable development.

In this context, the University develops actions with a positive impact on the wider society through cultivating a social consciousness culture in sectors of social interest (environmental, humanitarian activities, sports, health).

In the health sector, a voluntary blood donation has been established twice a year as well as free medical examinations for the public. The annual sports co-organized events include participation in marathon and sporting activities for good causes. The University also supports a variety of public and nonprofit organizations such as PASYKAF, the Red Cross, Hope for Children, Love Route, and takes initiatives for socially vulnerable groups such as refugees, unemployed youths (under special programmes of the HR Development Office) and poor fellow citizens or deprived students and excellent students (through scholarships). Finally, while pursuing the promotion of culture, the University is committed to strengthening existing activities and to developing new cultural activities of the University on the basis of a long-term policy, in cooperation with the cultural institutions of Cyprus.
