Structure

The Cyprus International Institute for Environmental and Public Health (CII) offers the Master in Public Health (MPH) with specialization in Environmental Health or in Epidemiology and Biostatistics. The Master in Public Health (MPH) is probably the most popular and recognized field of specialization in the public health sector. The program is taught entirely in English. It begins each year in September and finishes in November of the following year. The program relies upon an integrated, interdisciplinary curriculum taught by distinguished faculty from Cyprus University of Technology and other leading schools of public health.

The aim of the MPH program is to educate health professionals and other interested prospective students in acquiring the technical and soft skills required by the health professional employers of the 21st century, allowing our graduates to become the new leaders in public health. The program allows for the specialization of the student in two concentrations that will be offered in terms of academic and professional interests of students (Epidemiology & Biostatistics or Environmental Health). Another strength of the program is the Institute’s experience of >14 years in offering high quality Master programs due to its historical association with the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

The MPH entails a core training program for both concentrations accompanied by specialized courses, providing depth and breadth to the studies that each student would like to pursue. The program will build on courses already offered by our Institute, such as Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Occupational Health, etc. with additional courses in Health Economics and Policy, Health Education and Promotion, and Global Health. The class size is small (about fifteen students).

The MPH program consists of 11 modules (including the research thesis) that are required to fulfill the requirements of the MPH. All modules (except the thesis) are composed of teaching periods, each of two or three hours duration, corresponding to a suite of ECTS (4 to 10). Two regular semesters (Fall and Spring) constitute the teaching period of the program and the remaining months are fully devoted to the research thesis. In brief, each student should take all 8 core modules for 46 ECTS plus 2 out of the 4 specialization modules for an additional 14 ECTS and the research dissertation module for 30 ECTS for a total of 90 ECTS.

Duration of studies

Full Time: Total duration of 14 months for a total of 90 ECTS with 60 ECTS of coursework (46 ECTS core courses and 14 ECTS specialization) over two teaching periods and 30 ECTS of research dissertation.

Strengths

The research and teaching structure and rules of the new MPH program will build, at least initially, to research and teaching structures, rules and functions of the Institute (Cll), as already established previously and jointly with the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH). The Cll was then invited to address the educational and research gap in Public Health in Cyprus and the wider Eastern Mediterranean region. The Institute is the only academic entity in Cyprus in the field of Public Health and Environment, and since 2009 is part of the Health Sciences School of Cyprus University of Technology (CUT), which offers an environment of stability and perspective. The existing five members of full-time faculty are dynamic and energetic team of young scientists in the field of Public and Environmental Health who will support and directly operate the MPH.

The existing Infrastructure of Cll with wet and dry laboratories accompanied by a small biobank would be extremely useful for the proper operation of the MPH and training of the students. Advanced technology of atmospheric pollution measuring station is created and installed in Cll.

The Cll has developed research groups involved with smoking, diabetes and obesity, human exposome, epidemiology of cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and meta analysis.

The use of English as the language of instruction will allow admission to students not only from Cyprus but also from many other countries in the region and the world. More than 130 students from Cyprus, Middle East, North Africa, Europe and America have already graduated from Cll. The quality of Cll educational programs is reflected upon the professional development and career of our graduates, because several of them have been awarded full fellowships for doctoral programs at some of the best universities in the world such as Harvard, Yale, Oxford etc. Other graduates they have taken important jobs in Cyprus and abroad.

The Institute is a proud member of the Association of Schools of Public Health in Europe as the only organization so far in Cyprus and has begun the process of applying for evaluation for accreditation of our graduate programs from the Union Schools of Public Health in Europe.

Employment opportunities

The Master program in Public Health will provide knowledge and expertise to a wide range of professionals in order to make a difference in their communities and beyond, by succeeding in advancing the overall health of the populations locally as well as globally. This Public Health degree will open doors far beyond the commonly assumed government career path. It can also serve as a tool to boost an already established career in the health sciences and healthcare sector.

There are a wide variety of settings in which public health graduates may work. Some of those settings are:

  • Public: Health department administration, disaster preparedness and public nursing are just three areas in which a public health graduate may work for the government.
  • Education: Education-related roles in public health are often as teachers to public health students or within research institutes.
  • Private: Whether as a consultant or employee, public health graduates often work for pharmaceutical brands, healthcare organizations or insurance companies.
  • Non-profit: Non-profit roles for public health graduates tend to address gaps in healthcare or specialize in a specific population. For example, a non-profit role may serve minorities, or mothers.

Our MPH graduates will be able to compete for new positions either in the public or private sector of Cyprus or in abroad, just as those bright examples of graduates/alumni from the existing MS programs of the Cll.

Some success examples of key positions held by our graduates so far are:

  • Senior Officer, Department of Environment(Cyprus)
