Women in Science Dr. Maria Kambanaros

On the occasion of the World Day for Women in Science, the Cyprus University of Technology, with a view to encouraging women and girls towards engaging in science, presents women scientists being employed at the University and devoted to their research activities.

Dr. Kambanaros presents the workshop "Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)" that is housed in the new Rehabilitation Clinic of the Cyprus University of Technology.

The TMS is a non-invasive therapy that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate the brain aiming to treat various psychiatric disorders (e.g. depression) and neurological diseases (e.g., stroke rehabilitation). The TMS is a brain stimulation technique based on the production of short magnetic fields using an insulated wire coil placed over the scalp. The magnetic fields are of the same type with magnetic fields used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

This technique is based on the fact that brain cells are powered by electricity. The magnetic pulses produced by the TMS produce a weak electrical current in the brain that activates certain areas of the brain. Scientific research has shown that this treatment is safe, is well tolerated by the patients since, unlike medication, it has almost no side effects and has beneficial effects on various psychiatric and neurological diseases.
