Dear friends,
The Cyprus University of Technology Language Centre offers to its students, administrative and teaching staff and to the wide public the opportunity to learn foreigner languages in a very friendly environment and with the use of the latest theories, methods and materials that are used in the learning and teaching of language, including those of the New Technologies.
Languages for students
English
The university offers English programmes for all students. These programmes last from two to four semesters. They included English for Academic Purposes (EAP) and English for Specific Academic Purposes (ESAP). The EAP programmes specialise students in the use of English at an academic level. The ESAP programmes specialise students in the use of English at an academic level in their field of study:
- Geotechnical Sciences and Environmental Management
- Management and Economics
- Health Sciences
- Applied Arts and Communication
- Engineering and Technology
German
German is a compulsory course and constitutes an integral part of all Hotel and Tourism Management students for two semesters (Semesters I and II), at CEFR Level A1 and A2.
German and other languages
Together with other languages, German and Greek will be offered gradually as an optional course to all students. These languages will include Italian, French, Turkish, Arabic, Chinese and Russian at the following levels: first at level A1-A2, and then at level B1-B2. These languages will be gradually offered to students in all fields of study, based on needs ( for example Greek, French and other languages for student exchange programmes, etc.)
Languages for the University Community and the broader local community
English, Greek, Italian, French, Turkish, Arabic, Chinese, Russian and other languages will be offered to university staff, the local business world and the general public based upon request and specific needs, for example Greek for foreigners or specific professionals, Russian for business, etc.
Other services
The Language Centre also offers other types of language services such as Teacher Training Programmes, Examinations, Translation and interpreting, and Editing and Proofreading.
The Language Centre offers its services to anyone who needs to learn a foreign language for study or research purposes, professional obligations or personal interest.
The Language Centre is developing into a Language Centre of Excellence, where the New Technologies are used as an essential tool towards achieving language learning and teaching, evaluation and research.
The teaching staff of the Language Centre has the appropriate qualifications needed for language teaching based on current theories and practices, tools and materials, including New Technologies. Their qualifications include a BA in a language, a postgraduate degree in language teaching and a specialisation in relevant areas such as the use of New Technologies in language teaching, language curriculum and materials development, and evaluation. The teaching staff works collaboratively to develop programmes and language teaching material, student tests and evaluation programmes, to develop ways of using New Technologies in language learning, in professional training, in research, in European programmes and in any other aspect that promotes language learning and ensures continuous professional development. The Language Centre programmes promote autonomous and lifelong learning.
The Language Centre is developing into a Language Centre of Excellence, where the New Technologies are used as an essential tool towards achieving language learning and teaching, evaluation and research. The Language Centre also aims to establish cooperation both with the departments as well as with distinguished visiting scholars and professionals from all over the world, thus contributing substantially to the development of students’ linguistic competence in their field of study and their future profession.
Our expectations from our students and future graduates are equally high. We feel privileged to have the responsibility of the development of their linguistic competence. We look forward to work together with them and develop a Language Centre of Excellence, one we would all be proud of.
