Department of Communication and Internet Studies

The Department of Communication and Internet Studies (CIS) is one of the first of its kind in the European Union and reflects the need for the interdisciplinary study of how the use of the Internet impacts on human coexistence and the Knowledge Society. The long-term objective of the Department is to promote Internet Studies and to upgrade it to the status of an autonomous discipline within the field of Communication, both in Cyprus and internationally, by being at the forefront of academic theory and research.

At the Department of Communication and Internet Studies (CIS) we recognize that communication as creative expression is a fundamental element of human culture. The historical development of communicative modalities - from Paleolithic cave drawings, Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs to NASA's Echo satellite and MTV - indicates that communication technologies, though multifaceted, have played a crucial role in the development of the human condition. A comprehensive understanding of communication technologies therefore requires an exposition of the contemporary human-machine interface which takes full account of the social relations of power in which communicative actions are contextually embedded. For this reason, CIS promotes interdisciplinary scholarship and applied research in the fields of Communication, Mass Media and the Internet.

CIS faculty come from diverse areas of specialization such as Media Studies (press, radio, cinema, television), Learning Sciences, Computer Science including Content Creation and Networked Multi-media Communications, Sociology, Cultural Studies, Ethnic Studies, Social Psychology, Political Science and Journalism. Our curriculum and research orientation focuses on the relationship between new communication technologies and societal activity at local, European, and international levels; the programme of study at undergraduate, post-graduate, and professional levels has been designed to reflect this emphasis. The ultimate goal of CIS is to foster and promote scholarship on how social activity shapes and is shaped by new technologies, and how this interaction impacts on such crucial aspects of society as the economy, politics, education, and culture.

The Department offers a BA in Communication and Internet Studies, the first degree of its kind offered at university level in Cyprus. Courses in the first two years have been designed to provide background knowledge about Internet technologies, media studies and the societal impact of technology. After successful completion of the first two foundation years, students can select one of the following specializations: a) Communication Technologies, b) Information Management, and c) Information Society. Upon completion of the programme, graduates will have acquired the knowledge and skills necessary to pursue advanced university degrees or to be employed in information-intensive professions, such as information technology managerial positions, advertising, public relations and campaigning, film and television production, web-design, mass communications, and journalism.
