About the Department

Introduction

The Department offers the following two orientations with the respective curricula that fully meet the needs of the 21st century.

  • Civil Engineering
  • Surveying Engineering and Geoinformatics Engineering

These specializations are playing a significant role in the identification, classification, formulation, creation and maintenance of the built environment so as to fit in harmony in the natural environment.

The Civil Engineers are responsible for the planning, design, construction and maintenance of buildings, roads and bridges, ports, dams, coastal infrastructure, airports, water supply systems, providing clean water and health care, etc. The degree of Civil Engineering offers a wide range of professional opportunities to its holders at a both national and international level. The Civil Engineers now have the opportunity to apply their skills in various construction projects of large and small scale, while an opportunity may also arise in study group projects that involve people from a wide range of specialties.

With these capabilities Civil Engineers can assist in building construction using ecological systems as well as in the development and provision of practical solutions such as the life-cycle analysis method using intelligent urban systems and infrastructure networks. Civil engineers have more and more the opportunity to come into contact with new technologies that will enable them to develop effective solutions and make a significant contribution to society.

The Surveying Engineers and Geoinformatics Engineers are responsible for the measurement, study and management of three-dimensional space through the development and implementation of complex techniques, analysis, processing and interpretation of large-scale measurement and qualitative information derived from our three-dimensional geographic environment. Surveying Engineers and Geoinformatics Engineers are responsible for the development of new methods and measurement techniques as well as for studying interdependencies and changes of the acquired information according to their applications. These applications range from surveying, photogrammetric, hydrographic, geodetic and geophysical surveys, remote sensing and geographic information systems (GIS) to the local and regional planning, environmental monitoring, archeology, coastal management, etc.

Both orientations of Civil Engineering and Surveying Engineering also include research and education areas such as water resources management and planning, design and operation of transportation systems.

The Civil Engineering Department of the Cyprus Technological University aims to develop high-level courses that will lead students towards ensuring undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. The graduates can work in a dynamic and stimulating environment that allows them to develop the wide range of skills making their presence important in the upgrading and improvement of quality of life and space infrastructures in which they operate.

The Civil Engineering Department will provide high quality education and research programmes with international guidelines. The Department offers students the opportunity to develop a strong technical and theoretical background through their curricula. Also, students will better understand the practical importance of the direction they choose aiming to develop the necessary skills for their future involvement in the workplace.

The Department aims the students’ direct engagement with industry, consultancy firms and public bodies. This will give students the opportunity to come into direct contact with the current developments in Civil Engineering and Surveying Engineering while working alongside professionals through their traineeship.

The Department aims to develop partnerships with other academic institutions from the European and international level and to encourage both the institution of students’ exchange and the establishment of cooperation institution through visiting scholars thus helping significantly postgraduate and undergraduate students of the Department with their own specialization.

The Department's curricula aim to provide students with a theoretical and technical background in the directions of Civil Engineering, Surveying Engineering and Geoinformatics Engineering taking into account the current and future needs of the society. The number of selected courses offered by the department for both orientations will provide students the opportunity to choose from the latest thematic areas such as offshore constructions, durability and construction risk management, radiometry and microwave science, monuments capture, property value assessments etc.

Vision

The aim of our Department is to develop a dynamic, stimulating and challenging environment for teaching and research of the highest international standard offering our students the opportunity to develop a strong technical background, a clear appreciation of the practical significance of their subject area and strong personal and professional attributes that will enable them to make a significant contribution within their profession.

The Department aims to establish strong interactions with industry and government to give the students the opportunity to get involved in current civil engineering developments and work alongside the professionals through individual and team project work and professional training. One of our goals is to establish strong links with other academic institutions from around the world and encourage exchange of students and visits of distinguished academics who can bring their specialist expertise to our department’s undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Our teaching and research structure, while aiming to provide the students with a strong technical background in the core traditional areas of civil engineering and surveying engineering & geo-informatics, aims to remain sensitive and receptive to the current and future needs of society. The courses will be continuously evolving to meet future needs. The range of advanced specialist subject options offered by the department will provide the students the opportunity to cover from more modern subject areas such as offshore engineering and integrity and risk management of civil infrastructure, radiometry and microwave, geometric documentation of monuments, real estate valuations which are becoming increasingly more important.
